Leisure Dispute Leads Sharjah Woman to Seek Divorce

A woman in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, has sought a divorce after complaining that her husband rarely takes her out or shows interest in travelling and spending leisure time outside the home.

The case was discussed by Dr Radhia Hassan Al Raisi, director of the Family Guidance Department at Sharjah Courts, during a television programme. According to a report by local media outlet Sama TV, the woman approached the family counselling service after becoming increasingly concerned about her husband’s reluctance to go out with her.

The woman reportedly said that her husband preferred staying at home most of the time. He showed little enthusiasm for taking her on trips, going out for leisure activities or travelling together. While she regarded spending time outside the home as an important part of enjoying married life, she felt that her husband did not share the same preference.

Despite her frustration, the woman did not describe her husband as a difficult or abusive partner. On the contrary, she reportedly praised him as generous, patient and well-mannered. Her concern centred largely on the difference between their lifestyles and their contrasting attitudes towards recreation and spending time outside the home.

Family counsellors advised her to consider other ways of enjoying her leisure time rather than allowing the disagreement to escalate into a decision to end the marriage. She was encouraged to go out with her siblings and other family members and to maintain social activities independently.

The counselling service also urged her not to make a decision about divorce solely because her husband was reluctant to travel or spend leisure time outside the house. Officials stressed that differences in personal preferences are not necessarily signs of a fundamentally troubled marriage.

Dr Al Raisi said differences in lifestyle and attitudes towards leisure can sometimes create frustration between husbands and wives. However, such disagreements do not automatically justify separation. Couples may have different interests, social habits and ideas about how they prefer to spend their free time, making communication and mutual understanding important in managing those differences.

The case also highlights how expectations about companionship can vary within a marriage. For one partner, travelling, dining out or simply spending time together outside the home may be an important way of maintaining closeness. The other may feel more comfortable with a quieter routine at home. Such differences can become a source of tension if they are not discussed openly.

Family counselling officials therefore advised against turning relatively minor disagreements into legal or family disputes when there are no serious underlying problems in the relationship. Their view was that couples should first explore practical compromises and understand each other’s expectations before considering a decision as significant as divorce.

The case serves as an unusual example of how seemingly ordinary differences in lifestyle can become a source of serious marital tension. It also underlines the role of communication and compromise in resolving disagreements before they develop into wider disputes.
