Life Imprisonment in Land Killing Case

A court in Mymensingh has sentenced five men to life imprisonment for the murder of a man over a long-standing land dispute in Haluaghat upazila. The convicted individuals have also been fined, with the court ordering additional custodial terms in default of payment.

The verdict was delivered on Sunday afternoon by Judge Md Shamsuddin of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 in Mymensingh.

According to the court’s ruling, each of the convicts was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined one lakh taka each. In default of payment, they will have to serve an additional one year in prison.

The convicted persons are Sukkur Ali (54), Amir Ali (43), Zamin Ali (41), Hatem Ali (39), and Harez Ali (33), all residents of Mokamia village in Haluaghat.

Court documents and prosecution records reveal that the incident occurred on 14 October 2012 in Mokamia village. The killing took place during a violent dispute over harvesting paddy from contested land. The victim, Habibur Rahman, was attacked and killed amid escalating tensions linked to ownership and control of agricultural fields.

Following the incident, the victim’s niece, Mosha Nuru-nnahar, filed a murder case on 16 October 2012, naming 25 individuals in her complaint. Law enforcement agencies later investigated the matter and submitted a charge sheet to the court on 7 September 2013.

During the lengthy trial process, the court examined testimony from 15 witnesses. After concluding the hearings and reviewing evidence, the court set Sunday as the date for delivering its judgment.

Ultimately, 20 accused persons were acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence, while five were found guilty and handed life sentences.
