An Indian national has been detained in Bangladesh after allegedly entering the country illegally and attempting to remain in hiding in the coastal district of Bhola, according to the Coast Guard’s southern zone authorities.
The arrest took place at approximately 4:30 pm on Saturday (11 April) near the Kheyaghat Bridge area under Bhola Sadar Upazila. The operation was conducted by members of the Coast Guard Base Bhola following what officials described as a confidential intelligence tip-off regarding the movement of an undocumented foreign national in the locality.
The detainee has been identified as Abdul Momin, son of Bosar Ali, from Bashpukur village under Jatrapur Police Station in Sonamura district of India’s Tripura state. Officials said he had been staying in Bangladesh without legal documentation after crossing the international border earlier this month.
According to Lieutenant Md. Abul Kashem, media officer of the Coast Guard Southern Zone, the suspect was apprehended during a targeted operation in the Kheyaghat Bridge vicinity. During initial questioning, Abdul Momin reportedly admitted that he entered Bangladesh illegally on 7 April through the Birampur border area of Dinajpur district. He further claimed that he crossed the border with assistance from an individual linked to a smuggling network.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the alleged accomplice or provided further details regarding the nature of the suspected smuggling activities. However, officials indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the case is connected to a wider cross-border trafficking or criminal network operating along the northern frontier.
Following his detention, the individual was handed over to Bhola Sadar Police Station for legal proceedings. Police confirmed that a case has been filed against him under relevant immigration and border violation laws. He is expected to be produced before a court on Sunday (12 April).
Bhola Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Monirul Islam stated that necessary legal steps are being taken in accordance with existing laws governing illegal entry and unauthorised stay in the country.
Authorities also reiterated that surveillance and patrol operations in coastal and border-adjacent regions have been intensified to prevent unauthorised crossings and related criminal activity. Officials emphasised that such enforcement drives would continue in the future as part of broader efforts to strengthen border security.
