A man has died during an anti-narcotics operation conducted by the Department of Narcotics Control in Magura district, triggering allegations of excessive force and prompting unrest in the local community.
The deceased, identified as Akbar Molla, aged 40, was a resident of Charpara village under Binodpur Union in Mohammadpur upazila of Magura. He worked as a brick kiln labourer. His family and local residents have alleged that he was beaten to death during the operation, while authorities claim he died after the recovery of illicit substances from his possession.
According to relatives and eyewitness accounts, a team from the Magura district office of the Department of Narcotics Control carried out a raid in the area at around 10:30 pm on Saturday. During the operation, Akbar Molla was reportedly woken from sleep and subjected to physical assault. He became critically injured at the scene and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Following the incident, tensions escalated rapidly in the locality. Agitated residents reportedly clashed with members of the anti-narcotics team, resulting in injuries to several officials. The situation prompted concern among law enforcement agencies as unrest spread through the area.
Magura Additional Superintendent of Police Mirajul Islam stated that approximately 300 grams of cannabis were recovered from the individual during the operation. He further noted that the exact cause of death had not yet been confirmed and that the matter would be clarified following the post-mortem examination. Legal action, he added, would be taken based on the findings of the autopsy report.
