At least three people have died over the past 24 hours in separate lightning strike incidents across three upazilas in Noakhali district, highlighting the continuing vulnerability of rural communities to severe weather conditions during the pre-monsoon period.
The deceased have been identified as nine-year-old Md Ayman of Kabirhat upazila, 21-year-old Arafat of Hatiya upazila, and 17-year-old madrasa student Tanzila Akhtar of Subarnachar upazila.
The most recent incident occurred on Tuesday morning at around 7:00 am in Nayapara village under Ward 8 of Char Amanullah Union in Subarnachar upazila. Tanzila Akhtar, a first-year Alim student at Ismail Fazil Madrasa, was walking near her home when she was struck by lightning. She died on the spot. She was the daughter of Sheikh Mozammel Santu of the same area.
Local representatives confirmed the incident, noting that Tanzila was known as a bright student. Reports indicate she had achieved one of the only two GPA-5 results in Subarnachar during the previous year’s Dakhil examinations, a distinction that had earned her recognition within the community. Her sudden death has prompted widespread grief in the locality.
Charjabbar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Lutfur Rahman stated that police were informed immediately and a team was dispatched to the scene. He added that further details would be confirmed following an investigation.
Earlier, on Monday afternoon, Md Ayman, a child from Char Mandalia village in Ward 6 of Dhanashalik Union under Kabirhat upazila, was killed while playing in his home courtyard. He was the son of Rafiq Mia. Locals rushed him to Kabirhat Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
In a separate incident on the same day, Arafat, a 21-year-old trader from Purba Gamchakhali village in Ward 6 of Char Ishwar Union under Hatiya upazila, died while returning home after collecting peanuts from a field. According to family members, the lightning strike occurred in the presence of his mother, and he died instantly at the scene. The incident was confirmed by Hatiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kabir Hossain.
