Officers from the District Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested a local politician, Rabiul Hasan Sohag, in Jamalpur following his alleged involvement in a stolen motorcycle racket. Sohag, who serves as the office secretary for the Rashidpur Union Jubo Dal—the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)—and previously held the position of general secretary for the local Chhatra Dal, was apprehended alongside the recovery of a stolen motorbike.
Shahinur Islam Talukdar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Jamalpur District Detective Branch, confirmed the arrest on Sunday afternoon.
The operation was launched following critical leads obtained during the interrogation of three suspects—Faruk, Razzak, and Saddam—who were remanded in police custody over their ties to an organized vehicle theft syndicate. Under questioning, the trio confessed to their roles in stealing motorbikes across the district and identified Sohag as the primary operative managing the sale and distribution of the stolen vehicles.
Acting on this intelligence, a detective team conducted a targeted raid late on Saturday night in the Rashidpur Pakulla area of Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, successfully taking Sohag into custody. Subsequent questioning revealed that he had been leading the syndicate for a considerable period, utilizing his local influence to coordinate the storage and resale of stolen property. Following directions provided by Sohag during preliminary questioning, detectives conducted a follow-up raid in the Rashidpur Bazar area later that night, where they seized a stolen motorcycle that he had previously negotiated for sale.
Vehicle theft remains a persistent security concern across suburban and rural hubs in Bangladesh, where organized gangs often target two-wheelers due to high resale demand and ease of movement across district borders. Law enforcement officials noted that politically affiliated individuals occasionally exploit their positions to shelter criminal rings, making coordinated intelligence-led raids essential to dismantling these networks.
Detective Branch chief Shahinur Islam Talukdar stated that formal charges have been filed against the suspect under relevant sections of the law. Sohag was produced before a Jamalpur court on Sunday afternoon, where police sought his formal detention. The officer emphasized that intelligence gathering and targeted drives will continue across the district until the remaining members of the vehicle theft network are identified and brought to justice.
