In Madhabdi, under Narsingdi district, a violent incident linked to a romantic dispute has left a young man critically injured and resulted in the arson of three separate houses, escalating tensions in the locality.
The injured individual, 22-year-old Sajjad Hossain, son of expatriate Mahtab Bhuiyan, was attacked with sharp weapons late on Sunday night in the Khanmardi area of Madhabdi municipality, under Narsingdi Sadar upazila. According to police and local sources, Sajjad sustained severe injuries and was rushed in an emergency condition to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he remains under intensive care.
The incident is believed to have stemmed from a long-standing romantic relationship between Sajjad and a 17-year-old college student from the same locality. The pair had reportedly eloped on multiple occasions and were later said to have undergone a secret marriage ceremony. While Sajjad’s family accepted the relationship, the girl’s family objected on the grounds that she was still a minor.
In an attempt to resolve the dispute, a local mediation meeting was held on Saturday night involving community elders and influential residents. It was decided that the couple would be formally married once the girl reached 18 years of age, and until then she would remain at her father’s home.
However, tensions escalated sharply the following day. On Sunday evening, amid heavy rain and stormy weather, Sajjad was allegedly intercepted alone on the road and attacked by unidentified assailants wielding sharp weapons. He was left critically injured before being rescued and transported to hospital.
News of the attack quickly spread, triggering outrage among Sajjad’s family members and local residents. In retaliation, an angry mob reportedly set fire to three houses belonging to the girl’s family members, including her father’s house, as well as those of her uncle and aunt. The fires were allegedly started by pouring petrol, leading to extensive destruction of property.
Fire service officials later reported that they faced resistance while attempting to reach the scene. After coordinated efforts with law enforcement, the fires were eventually brought under control, but not before all three houses were completely destroyed.
