Low Market Prices Overshadow Bumper Boro Harvest

Despite achieving a bumper harvest during the current Boro season, farmers in the Jhenaigati Upazila of Sherpur are facing significant financial distress. While the fields are laden with golden paddy, the intersection of falling market prices, rising labour costs, and inclement weather has transformed a period of expected prosperity into one of profound concern.

The Labour-Price Disparity

The primary crisis facing the agricultural community is the inverted relationship between the cost of production and market returns. Currently, the daily wage for a single farm labourer has surged to between £6.50 and £7.15 (approximately 1,000 to 1,100 BDT). In stark contrast, a maund (approximately 37.32 kg) of paddy is fetching only £4.80 to £5.80 (750 to 900 BDT) in the local markets. Consequently, the sale of one maund of rice is insufficient to cover the daily wages of a single labourer.

Climatic Pressures and Rising Overhead

Irregular storms and rainfall have compounded these difficulties. In low-lying areas, such as Kalinagar village, fields have begun to submerge, forcing farmers to expedite harvesting under precarious conditions. This urgency has further spiked the demand for manual labour, doubling previous wage rates.

Farmers, including Magbul Mia of Mazhlikanda village, have noted that the costs of essential inputs—including irrigation, fertilisers, pesticides, and mechanised tilling—have increased substantially over recent years. Many cultivators rely on credit and local loans to fund these inputs, and current market rates suggest they will struggle to break even, let alone service their debts.

Agricultural Statistics and Government Intervention

According to Mr. Md. Farhad Hossain, the Jhenaigati Upazila Agriculture Officer, approximately 14,600 hectares of land were dedicated to high-yield and local Boro varieties this season. While the harvest began a week ago, it is expected to reach its peak in the coming days.

Metric Details
Total Cultivation Area 14,600 Hectares
Current Labour Wage (Daily) 1,000 – 1,100 BDT
Market Price per Maund 750 – 900 BDT
Government Procurement Price 1,440 BDT per Maund
Harvest Recommendation Harvest at 80% ripeness to avoid storm damage

The Department of Agricultural Extension has advised farmers to harvest their crops once they reach 80% maturity to mitigate the risk of hail and flash floods. While the government has announced a procurement price of 1,440 BDT per maund, the program has yet to impact the local market fully. Farmers maintain that unless official procurement begins immediately, they will face irreparable financial losses, potentially discouraging future cultivation in the region.
