Ludo Dispute Among Children Leaves One Dead in Brahmanbaria Clash

One man was killed and at least 15 people were injured after a dispute reportedly stemming from a quarrel between children over a game of Ludo escalated into a violent clash in Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria.

The incident took place at around 9am on Saturday, 1 August, in Paikpara village under Harshpur Union. The deceased was identified as Hamdu Mia, 53, a resident of the Banderhati area of Paikpara village.

According to police and local residents, the trouble began on Friday afternoon when Hamdu Mia’s 11-year-old son, Nirab, and Yasin, 12, the son of Abul Islam, became involved in a physical altercation while playing Ludo. The argument reportedly intensified, and Hamdu Mia allegedly struck Yasin on the head with a stick during the incident.

The dispute did not end there. According to the allegations, tensions between the two families continued to rise overnight before a group of people, reportedly led by Abul Islam, went to Hamdu Mia’s home on Saturday morning carrying locally made weapons. A confrontation then broke out between the two sides.

Hamdu Mia was reportedly attacked during the clash and died at the scene. His eight-year-old son, Hasan, was also seriously injured. The violence left several others from both sides injured, including Liton Mia, 35; Ershad, 40; Rezu Begum; Faruk Mia; and Islam Mia. Local sources said the total number of injured people was at least 15.

The injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The condition of those who sustained serious injuries was not immediately available.

The incident has caused concern in the village, where a dispute that reportedly began with a quarrel between two children quickly developed into a deadly confrontation involving adults from the two sides. Such incidents can escalate rapidly when personal disputes spread beyond the individuals directly involved, particularly when relatives and neighbours become involved.

Bijoynagar police said they rushed to the area after receiving information about the clash and brought the situation under control. Police also took steps to recover Hamdu Mia’s body and prepare it for the required post-mortem examination.

Bijoynagar police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Ahsan Ullah said the exact circumstances surrounding the death and the sequence of events leading to the clash were being investigated.

He said police were working to establish the precise cause of the violence and determine the responsibilities of those involved. The situation in the area was reported to be under control following the incident.

Authorities are expected to take further legal action based on the findings of the investigation. The case highlights how a seemingly minor dispute can turn deadly when tensions escalate into group violence.
