A teacher at a madrasa in Madan upazila of Netrokona has been arrested in connection with a case filed after an 11-year-old female madrasa student was found to be pregnant.
The accused was arrested by a team from Rapid Action Battalion-14 (RAB-14) at around 3:00 am on Tuesday night from Gauripur upazila in Mymensingh, according to law enforcement officials.
The matter was confirmed to news media by Additional Superintendent of Police MD.Samsuzzaman, Company Commander responsible for media affairs at RAB-14. He said a press briefing on the arrest would be held at 12:00 pm on Wednesday at the RAB battalion headquarters in the Akua Bypass area of Mymensingh.
According to local residents, the first information report and police sources, the arrested teacher had established a women’s Qawmi madrasa four years ago in the area. The child had been studying there while living at her maternal grandfather’s house.
Sources said the girl’s father had separated from her mother and moved elsewhere. As a result, the child’s mother worked as a domestic worker in a household in Sylhet to support the family.
Family members reportedly became concerned after the child recently began feeling unwell and showed noticeable physical changes. Her mother later travelled from Sylhet and questioned her daughter, after which details of the incident allegedly emerged.
On 18 April, the child was taken to a clinic in Madan upazila town for medical examination. Following a series of tests, attending physicians confirmed that the girl was pregnant.
Subsequently, the child’s mother filed a case at the local police station on Thursday, naming the madrasa teacher as the accused. Since the filing of the case, law enforcement agencies had been conducting operations to locate and arrest him.
Before his arrest, a video message attributed to the accused circulated on social media from an undisclosed location on Tuesday. In the video, he claimed that he was innocent.
The case has drawn public attention due to the age of the victim and the nature of the allegations. However, investigators have not yet publicly disclosed further legal details, including specific charges under which the case has been filed or the results of any medical or forensic examinations.
A formal briefing from RAB was scheduled following the arrest.
