Major Fire Breaks Out At Satkhira Hospital Triggering Mass Evacuations

A major fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon at Bliss Hospital, a private healthcare facility located near the Chowrangi intersection along the Satkhira-Khulna Highway.

Responding to emergency calls on Tuesday, 4 August, four operational units from the Satkhira Fire Service and Civil Defence arrived promptly at the scene to combat the blaze. Firefighters managed to bring the main flames under control relatively quickly; however, dense smoke rapidly engulfed multiple floors of the building, creating hazardous conditions for trapped patients, attending relatives, and medical staff.

Emergency personnel initiated a comprehensive search and rescue operation to evacuate individuals from the smoke-filled premises. Early reports indicate that several patients—including women, children, and elderly individuals—sustained injuries or suffered from severe smoke inhalation during the frantic rush to safety. Rescued individuals were immediately transported to Satkhira Sadar Hospital and Satkhira Medical College Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Official sources have not yet confirmed the total number of casualties.

The emergency response severely disrupted movement along the busy Satkhira-Khulna Highway, leading to a complete halt in vehicular traffic. A long queue of ambulances formed at the site to transfer injured patients to nearby medical facilities. Personnel from the Satkhira Sadar Police Station, Traffic Police, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) deployed alongside fire crews to manage crowds, secure the perimeter, and facilitate emergency transport routes.

Masudur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, confirmed that while the main fire was successfully extinguished, thick toxic smoke inside the hospital building remained the primary obstacle to rescue efforts. Search and rescue operations were ongoing at the time of reporting.

The cause of the outbreak and the extent of structural damage remain undetermined. Authorities confirmed that a detailed investigation into the incident will commence once rescue operations are fully concluded.
