According to police sources and the formal case statement, Hanif is married to the victim’s cousin. Leveraging this familial connection, he frequented the young woman’s household, eventually developing a close relationship with her. Around nine months ago, Hanif invited the woman on a trip to Sylhet, where he allegedly rented an apartment and coerced her into a sexual relationship under the false promise of marriage.

Following the incident in Sylhet, the victim repeatedly pressed Hanif to fulfil his promise of marriage. However, he continually delayed the matter using various pretexts. The situation escalated significantly when the victim discovered she had become pregnant. Upon learning of the pregnancy, Hanif allegedly began subjecting her to persistent physical and psychological abuse in an attempt to distance himself from the obligation.

The case documentation reveals that Hanif repeatedly attempted to force the woman to undergo a medical procedure to terminate the pregnancy at a hospital. When she steadfastly refused, he resorted to physical violence. On the night of 13 September, the victim travelled directly to Hanif’s ancestral home, demanding that he marry her immediately. Enraged by her presence, Hanif allegedly assaulted her severely with a bamboo stick. Local residents intervened after hearing her cries, rescuing her from the scene and arranging for her immediate admission to the local upazila health complex.

Following her discharge from medical care, the victim lodged a formal rape complaint against Hanif at Mohanganj Police Station on Tuesday. Police launched an investigation and executed the arrest the following night. Hafizul Islam Harun, Officer-in-Charge of Mohanganj Police Station, confirmed that the court remanded the suspect in custody following his initial appearance. He added that authorities are arranging official medical examinations for the victim and proceeding with formal legal action in accordance with statutory requirements.
