Man arrested with firearm and bullets in Kushtia assault

A man was taken into custody in Kushtia after being found in possession of a firearm and live ammunition, following an incident in which he was initially detained and beaten by local residents before being handed over to the police.

The arrest took place on Thursday morning at around 10am in the Kabil Mor area under Hatas Haripur Union in the Kushtia Sadar upazila. The individual has been identified as Farid Hossain, 35, son of the late Buro Mia from the Narirkul Matpara area of the same union.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, residents became suspicious of Farid’s movements in the locality. Acting on their concerns, a group of locals detained him for questioning. During a subsequent search of his person, they reportedly recovered a revolver along with six rounds of ammunition.

Tensions escalated shortly afterwards, and the man was allegedly assaulted by members of the public before law enforcement officers arrived at the scene. Police later intervened, rescuing him from the crowd and taking him into custody. He was then transported to hospital for medical treatment due to injuries sustained during the incident.

Local residents have claimed that Farid is associated with an alleged organised group known in the area as the “Shipon Bahini”. Some villagers also suggested that he may have been in possession of additional illegal weapons, though these claims have not been independently verified by authorities.

The incident has heightened concern among locals about the presence of illegal arms and organised criminal activity in the region. Community members have urged law enforcement agencies to intensify operations aimed at recovering illicit weapons and ensuring public safety.

Kushtia Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Kabir Hossain Matubbar confirmed the recovery of a revolver and six rounds of ammunition from the suspect. He also acknowledged that the man had sustained injuries due to the public assault prior to police intervention.

He added that the matter remains under investigation. Authorities are now examining the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm, as well as any possible links to wider criminal networks. Appropriate legal action will be taken once the investigation is complete.
