Man Dies Following Physical Assault Over Theft Allegation

The death of a young man, initially detained on allegations of theft and subsequently subjected to a physical assault, has prompted a police investigation in the Manikganj Sadar sub-district. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 6 May, within the confines of the Tora Market Management Committee office, where the deceased was reportedly held in custody following an accusation of pilfering fish.

The deceased has been identified as Krishna Rajbanshi, the foster son of Khudirám Rajbanshi, residing in the Bandutia Majhipara area of the Manikganj municipality. According to local reports, the sequence of events transpired between the morning and afternoon hours, leading to a situation that remains under rigorous official scrutiny.

Sequence of Events at Tora Market

According to information gathered from local sources, market management personnel apprehended two individuals, including Krishna Rajbanshi, on suspicion of stealing fish from the Tora Fish Wholesale Market. While one of the detainees was subsequently released into the custody of others, Rajbanshi was retained at the committee’s administrative office.

Witnesses and local residents allege that Rajbanshi was subjected to a physical assault by members of the management group before being confined within the office. During the interval between the morning and midday, he was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan, with a traditional cloth (gamchha) wrapped around his neck. The management committee has characterised the death as a suicide; however, the circumstances leading up to the discovery have raised significant questions among the local populace.

Allegations of Evidence Tampering

Following the discovery of the body, a secondary controversy erupted concerning the handling of the remains. Local residents, including a witness identified as Redwan Mamun, claimed that certain members of the market committee attempted to remove the body from the scene shortly after the incident became public.

“Two people were originally detained,” Mamun stated. “One was released, but the other was beaten and locked in the office. Later, when he was seen hanging, there was an attempt to remove the body under the guise of taking it to the hospital. We intervened and prevented them from moving the remains, after which they fled the scene.”

This intervention by the local community prevented the immediate removal of the deceased, ensuring that the scene remained intact for the arrival of law enforcement officials. The subsequent departure of the committee members from the premises has further intensified local suspicions regarding the nature of the detention and the subsequent fatality.

Official Police Response and Procedures

Upon receiving notification of the death, the Manikganj Sadar Police dispatched a team to the Tora Market Management Committee office to secure the area and initiate preliminary enquiries. The remains have been recovered and are being transported to the local morgue for a formal post-mortem examination.

Md. Ikram Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Manikganj Sadar Police Station, confirmed the official involvement in the case. He noted that the police are investigating the claims of both the initial assault and the alleged suicide.

“We have sent officers to the scene upon receiving the information,” OC Hossain remarked. “The body will be sent to the morgue for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. Legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and the post-mortem report.”

The investigation is expected to focus on several key areas, including the legality of the detention by the market committee, the extent of the physical injuries sustained by Rajbanshi during the alleged assault, and the veracity of the suicide claim. Under the laws of the jurisdiction, the unauthorised detention and physical punishment of suspects by civilians—often referred to as extrajudicial punishment or mob justice—is a punishable offence.

As of the current time, no formal arrests have been announced, though police are recording statements from witnesses and market officials. The post-mortem results are anticipated to be a critical factor in determining whether the case will be treated as a suicide or a homicide resulting from physical trauma.
