The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has officially ratified and extended a disciplinary sanction originally imposed by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) against Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni. The decision has placed the Benfica player’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in significant jeopardy, casting a shadow over what was anticipated to be his tournament debut for the national side.
The disciplinary proceedings against the 20-year-old winger stem from an incident that occurred during a UEFA Champions League fixture approximately two weeks ago. By extending a continental club ban to the World Cup, FIFA has reinforced its protocol that offensive conduct in any professional setting will have consequences for a player’s international career.
