A 35-year-old man has died after being electrocuted while allegedly attempting to interfere with an electricity transformer in Baghai upazila of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The victim, identified as Mamun Pramanik, was discovered hanging lifeless from a power pole early Friday morning after reportedly remaining suspended there throughout the night.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred in the Hamidukura field area under Arani municipality. Fire service personnel recovered the body at around 8:30 a.m. after being alerted earlier that morning.
Mamun Pramanik, son of Bhadhu Pramanik from the Gochar neighbourhood of Arani municipality, is believed to have climbed the electricity pole during the night. Locals suspect that he intended to cut power lines connected to a nearby transformer, possibly as part of an attempted theft. A bamboo pole and iron rods were found at the scene, suggesting that he had brought equipment to facilitate the climb and dismantling of electrical components.
Eyewitnesses stated that Mamun had initially ascended one pole before moving towards another where the transformer was installed. It is believed he cut one live wire successfully but was fatally electrocuted while attempting to sever a second. To secure himself, he had reportedly tied a cloth around his body and the pole, which ultimately left him suspended after the shock.
The body was discovered the following morning by a local farmer who went to the field to harvest vegetables. Alarmed residents quickly gathered and informed emergency services. Firefighters, in coordination with police and the rural electricity board, later removed the body once the area was declared safe.
Family members provided conflicting accounts of his lifestyle. His wife, Shahanaz Begum, said they have two children and that she currently lives at her parental home due to marital difficulties. She noted that Mamun had left home the previous day claiming he was going out for work and had borrowed money from her before departing. Their final conversation took place the same evening, when he said he was unwell and had returned to his village.
His brother-in-law, Sohrab Hossain, described him as a habitual offender involved in theft-related activities and stated that the family had no demands regarding the incident.
Police have registered an unnatural death case and sent the body for post-mortem examination. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
