Man Jailed After Smuggling Cannabis to Imprisoned Wife

A man has been apprehended at Magura District Jail while attempting to smuggle cannabis to his incarcerated wife. Following his arrest, a mobile court sentenced the individual to four months of simple imprisonment. The incident occurred on Thursday, 11 June, at approximately 11:00 AM at the main Registration Post (RP) gate of the correctional facility.

Incident and Apprehension

The detained individual has been identified as Dabir Mollya, son of Motaleb Mollya, residing in Juitara village within the municipality of Magura Sadar Upazila. According to Mohiuddin Haidar, the Superintendent of Magura District Jail, Dabir Mollya arrived at the prison on Thursday morning under the pretext of visiting his wife, Tonni Khatun.

In accordance with standard institutional security protocols, visitors must undergo a thorough physical search prior to entering the visitation zone. During this screening at the RP gate, prison guard Rafiqul Islam discovered a concealed packet containing approximately 50 grams of cannabis inside the pocket of Dabir’s jeans. Jail authorities immediately detained the suspect and notified the District Magistrate.

Mobile Court Proceedings

Following notification of the security breach, an executive magistrate alongside officers from the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) arrived at the prison gates to convene a mobile court.

During the summary trial, Dabir Mollya confessed that he had brought the illicit substance specifically for his wife inside the facility. Based on the recovered evidence and the defendant’s admission, the mobile court found Dabir Mollya guilty and handed down a four-month term of simple imprisonment. He was subsequently processed into Magura District Jail to serve his sentence.

Official records indicate that Tonni Khatun had been arrested by the police just two days prior to this incident due to her alleged involvement in narcotics distribution. She was subsequently remanded in custody at Magura District Jail.

Interrogations revealed that Tonni Khatun intended to continue her illicit narcotics activities while serving her sentence. To facilitate this, she instructed her husband to smuggle the contraband into the facility.
