A deeply unsettling incident has shaken the community of Gobindaganj Upazila in Gaibandha, where a man has allegedly stabbed his wife to death. The suspect, Biraj Mia, was apprehended by local residents as he attempted to flee the scene and was subsequently handed over to the police. This tragic incident unfolded on Monday afternoon in Goshaipur village, located within the Darbast Union of the upazila. The Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Gobindaganj Police Station, Swapan Kumar Sarkar, officially confirmed the developments on Tuesday morning.
The victim has been identified as 55-year-old Dulali Begum, the daughter of Dulu Mia from Chok Singhadanga village under the Talukkanupur Union. The detained husband, Biraj Mia, is the son of Fayez Uddin, hailing from the Sadar Colony village of Katabari Union.
Local sources revealed that a trivial domestic dispute escalated violently between the couple on Monday afternoon. In a fit of rage, Biraj drew a knife and stabbed Dulali directly in the chest, causing her to collapse and die on the spot. Following the brutal assault, Biraj fled his home and sought refuge in a nearby jute field. As the news of the murder spread, alarmed villagers launched a search, eventually tracking him down in his hiding place after dusk.
This horrific crime carries a grimly ironic backstory. Villagers and police records note that Biraj was accused of murdering his mother-in-law nineteen years ago. Dulali Begum had stood by her husband during that crisis, actively pursuing legal channels to secure his bail and release from prison. Decades later, the very man she saved from incarceration turned his violence upon her.
Officer-in-Charge Swapan Kumar Sarkar stated that law enforcement officials recovered Dulali’s body from the scene and transported it to the police station for further legal formalities, including a post-mortem examination. Biraj remains in custody, and the process of filing a formal murder case against him is currently underway.
