Pop superstar Katy Perry has apologised to thousands of disappointed fans after her scheduled performance at Belgium’s Werchter Boutique festival was cancelled only hours before she was due to take the stage, with organisers citing serious safety concerns caused by extreme weather.
The singer shared the news through an emotional Instagram post on Saturday, explaining that local authorities had ordered the event’s cancellation because of deteriorating weather conditions. The decision came as large parts of Europe continued to grapple with an intense heatwave followed by unstable weather, prompting officials to prioritise public safety at outdoor gatherings.
Perry revealed that she had already arrived backstage and was preparing for her performance when she was informed that the concert would not go ahead.
“Sadly my set at Werchter Boutique tonight can’t happen due to a government-mandated cancellation because of the incoming weather and crowd safety concerns,” she wrote, making it clear that the decision had been taken by the authorities rather than the organisers or her team.
Expressing her disappointment, Perry acknowledged the frustration of the estimated 55,000 fans who had travelled to see her perform. She said she shared their feelings, but stressed that safety had to remain the overriding priority.
“I am just as unhappy as you are,” she wrote. “The safety of all 55,000 of you always comes first.”
The cancelled appearance carried particular significance for the American singer. It would have marked her return to the Belgian festival for the first time in 17 years, making it one of the most anticipated stops on her current schedule. Perry revealed that she had planned a nostalgic tribute to her previous appearance by wearing the same outfit she had worn when she performed at the festival in 2009.
“I was looking forward to being back after 17 years,” she wrote. “I was even going to wear the same outfit from that 2009 show again.”
Her message concluded with a heartfelt apology to fans who had been looking forward to the concert. She also urged everyone attending the festival to leave the venue safely as the adverse weather approached.
“I am sorry I can’t change the weather, and even sorrier that all of us can’t be together tonight. I love you all, and please get home safe.”
Perry accompanied the post with a photograph showing her sitting outside the venue wearing a robe, while her stage costume hung nearby, underscoring how close she had come to taking the stage before the cancellation was announced.
The decision reflects the increasing challenges facing organisers of major outdoor music events across Europe, where prolonged periods of extreme heat have frequently been followed by severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds. Such rapidly changing weather conditions have led authorities to impose precautionary measures to reduce risks for performers, staff and large crowds.
While the cancellation was undoubtedly disappointing for fans, the swift decision by officials highlighted the growing emphasis on public safety at large-scale live events, particularly as increasingly unpredictable weather continues to affect festival schedules across the continent.
