A 34-year-old shopkeeper was critically injured on Saturday night when a group of masked, armed assailants stormed his grocery store and opened fire in Begumganj upazila, Noakhali. The victim, identified as Mizanur Rahman, also known as Mizan, was rushed to hospital and subsequently transferred to Dhaka as his medical condition deteriorated.
The armed assault occurred at approximately 10:15 pm on Saturday, 17 October 2026, at Mizan Store, located within Jinu Market in Ward 5 of Amanullapur Union. Mizan, a resident of East Joynarayanpur village in Ward 6 and the son of Ahammad Ullah, was attending to customers when a group of 20 to 25 masked men forcibly entered the premises. Without warning, the attackers fired at close range, striking him in the left side of his abdomen, his left arm, and his left thigh. As he collapsed onto the floor bleeding heavily, the gang fled the scene.
Local residents and eyewitnesses hurried to the site, rescuing the injured businessman and conveying him to the 50-bed Begumganj Upazila Health Complex. Doctors there provided initial emergency care before transferring him to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital. Due to the severity of his gunshot wounds and the need for specialized surgical intervention, physicians recommended his immediate transfer to a tertiary hospital in Dhaka later that night.
Mizan is known locally as a supporter of the Jamaat-e-Islami political party. Addressing the incident, Begumganj Upazila Jamaat Ameer Mohammad Abu Zayed noted that Mizan was a peaceful trader with no formal party post. He recalled a previous assault in 2020 when activists affiliated with the Awami League allegedly beat Mizan before turning him over to the police. Abu Zayed expressed suspicion that members of the same faction might be behind this latest attack, using masks to conceal their identities.
Law enforcement personnel arrived shortly after the shooting to secure the premises and gather evidence. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Model Police Station, Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, confirmed that the merchant sustained injuries from lead pellets fired during the attack. He stated that police teams inspected the crime scene and launched an investigation to establish the motive and identify the perpetrators. Formal legal actions will be initiated as soon as a written complaint is lodged by the victim’s family.
