Mass Protests Erupt in Narayanganj Over Mob Justice Murder Case

Local residents in Narayanganj have staged a mass protest rally following the filing of a murder case over the lynching of an alleged mugger. Gathering in the West Masdair area of Fatullah on Monday night, hundreds of demonstrators marched through local streets to vent their fury. They claim the police have wrongfully implicated innocent citizens, community leaders, and a local mosque imam in a criminal case that stems from an outburst of public frustration.

The unrest began after an ongoing investigation was launched into the death of a young man named Sijan, who died in hospital on Saturday night after being severely beaten by an angry crowd. Sijan’s mother, Shilpi Begum, filed a formal murder case at the Fatullah Model Thana, naming six distinct individuals—including the local imam—alongside 14 to 15 unidentified accomplices.

Local Outrage Over Alleged Criminal Gang Reign

During the protest assembly, residents painted a grim picture of life under Sijan’s alleged criminal influence. Demonstrators asserted that the deceased had a long-standing history of managing teenage street gangs, extortion, drug abuse, and violent muggings. For years, families in West Masdair lived under a shadow of fear, unable to freely navigate their own neighbourhoods after dusk.

Personal testimonies at the rally underscored the depth of the community’s grievances. A local fish trader tearfully related how Sijan and his associates had repeatedly targeted his business, forcibly taking his hard-earned cash. A female garment factory worker spoke out about the severe lack of safety for women and children in the area, noting that evening commutes had become a terrifying gauntlet due to constant harassment by Sijan’s gang. Local accounts suggest that just prior to the assault, a video of Sijan admitting to stealing and selling a young man’s mobile phone circulated on social media, acting as the catalyst for the fatal confrontation.

Demands for Fairness and Official Police Response

The protesters maintain that the initial intention was simply to detain the suspect and hand him over to law enforcement. However, the situation dissolved into chaotic mob justice as an increasingly agitated crowd gathered. Community leaders argue that using this tragic escalation to target respected social workers and religious figures is nothing short of malicious harassment. They are demanding a transparent investigation that separates passive onlookers from the actual instigators of the violence.

The Officer-in-Charge of Fatullah Model Thana, Mohammad Mahbub Alam, has urged calm whilst promising a meticulous review of the facts. He confirmed that a murder case has been officially registered, but emphasized that no arrests have been made thus far. Police authorities are currently awaiting the final post-mortem report to establish the precise medical cause of death. Alam assured the public that all local grievances and contextual details are being integrated into the ongoing investigation to ensure that justice remains balanced and objective.
