Matricide Investigation Launched in Baraigram After Fatal Assault

The local authorities in the Baraigram Upazila of Natore district have initiated a formal investigation following the death of a mother who was allegedly attacked by her son over a dispute involving money for narcotics. The victim, identified as Sajeda Begum, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, 3 May 2026, after battling for her life for two days at a tertiary referral hospital.

The violent altercation occurred on the afternoon of Friday, 1 May 2026, in the Pashchimpara neighbourhood of the Upazila. According to local sources and police reports, the suspect, a young man identified as Rajan, approached his mother, Sajeda Begum, with a demand for 500 BDT. The funds were reportedly intended to facilitate the purchase of illicit drugs.

When Sajeda Begum refused to provide the requested sum, Rajan reportedly became volatile. The situation escalated rapidly, culminating in a physical assault during which Rajan allegedly used a sharp weapon to stab his mother in the abdomen. The severity of the abdominal wound resulted in immediate internal trauma and significant blood loss, leaving the victim in a critical condition.

Medical Intervention and Fatality

Upon hearing the commotion, local residents intervened and discovered the victim in a state of physical distress. She was initially given preliminary assistance before being rushed to the Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital for specialised surgical intervention.

Medical staff at the RMC Hospital placed her under intensive observation as they attempted to stabilise her vital signs. Despite the efforts of the surgical and clinical teams, her condition continued to deteriorate over the following 48 hours. At approximately 7:00 pm on Sunday, Sajeda Begum was pronounced dead by the attending physicians. The hospital authorities have indicated that the primary cause of death was systemic failure resulting from the penetrating wound to the abdominal cavity.

The Baraigram Police Station acted swiftly following the report of the assault. Abdus Salam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the station, confirmed that the suspect, Rajan, was apprehended by law enforcement officers shortly after the incident took place on Friday.

“The police moved to detain the accused immediately after the attack was reported,” OC Abdus Salam stated. He further clarified that following the news of the victim’s passing on Sunday evening, the nature of the charges against the suspect would be formally upgraded to reflect the fatality.

The suspect is currently in judicial custody, and the police are in the process of completing the necessary documentation and evidence gathering required for a formal indictment. A post-mortem examination of the deceased is expected to be conducted at the Rajshahi Medical College morgue to provide definitive forensic evidence for the prosecution.
