Measles Outbreak Death Toll Rises as Seven More Die

Seven more people have died with measles-like symptoms in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, while 981 additional people have developed symptoms during the same period, according to the latest surveillance report released by the Directorate General of Health Services on Monday.

The figures cover the 24-hour period from 8am on Sunday to 8am on Monday. With the latest deaths, the number of people who have died after developing measles-like symptoms since 15 March has reached 816. Laboratory tests have confirmed measles as the cause of death in 99 cases. When the two categories are combined, the total number of deaths associated with the current outbreak stands at 915.

Of the seven deaths reported during the latest 24-hour period, five occurred in Dhaka Division. One death was recorded in Mymensingh Division and another in Barishal Division. The latest routine surveillance report did not provide detailed age breakdowns for those who died.

The scale of the outbreak is also reflected in the number of people reporting measles-like symptoms. Since 15 March, a total of 143,778 people have been recorded with such symptoms across the country. Of them, 125,386 have required hospital admission, while 120,913 patients have recovered and been discharged.

The latest report recorded 50 newly confirmed measles cases in the preceding 24 hours. Since 15 March, laboratory testing has confirmed measles in 17,930 people. No new death from laboratory-confirmed measles was reported during the latest 24-hour period.

Health authorities are maintaining separate figures for deaths among people with measles-like symptoms and deaths confirmed through testing. This distinction is intended to provide a clearer picture of the outbreak while recognising that not every suspected case can immediately be confirmed through laboratory testing.

Measles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly among people who have not developed sufficient immunity. Children are particularly vulnerable, although the infection is not confined to any particular age group. Fever, a runny nose, cough, red or watery eyes and a characteristic skin rash are among the symptoms commonly associated with the disease.

The infection can sometimes lead to serious complications, particularly in vulnerable patients. People who become severely unwell may require hospital-based care, making early recognition and timely medical attention important during an outbreak.

The latest figures underline the continuing pressure on health facilities as large numbers of people with suspected measles require assessment and treatment. The high number of hospital admissions also indicates the extent to which the outbreak is affecting health services.

Health specialists have stressed the importance of seeking medical advice promptly when children or other family members develop symptoms consistent with measles. Early identification can help ensure appropriate care and reduce the risk of further transmission.

With suspected cases, hospital admissions and deaths continuing to be recorded, close surveillance remains essential. The latest seven deaths serve as a fresh indication that the outbreak remains a serious public health concern and that continued efforts to identify cases, provide treatment and protect vulnerable people are needed.
