Eight people have died across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, with five children dying after developing symptoms associated with measles and three people losing their lives to dengue, according to figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Tuesday.
The latest health data also show that 907 new dengue cases were reported during the same period. Meanwhile, 1,077 children were admitted to hospitals with measles or symptoms resembling the disease, highlighting the continuing pressure on health facilities from two significant public health concerns.
The figures were published in the DGHS’s latest measles update and its daily dengue bulletin on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the separate measles report, a total of 943 children have died in Bangladesh from confirmed measles or measles-like symptoms as of 25 August. Of them, 99 deaths were among patients whose measles infection had been confirmed, while 844 deaths were recorded among children who had developed symptoms associated with measles.
The scale of the reported deaths has raised further concern over the impact of measles among children. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease and can spread quickly, particularly among children who are not adequately protected through vaccination. Severe cases can lead to serious complications, making early medical attention important when children develop persistent fever, rash, cough or other associated symptoms.
The latest hospital admission figures also indicate the continuing demand for paediatric care. With more than a thousand children admitted in a single day with measles or related symptoms, health facilities face the challenge of assessing patients, managing complications and providing timely treatment.
Dengue, meanwhile, continues to account for a substantial number of infections and deaths. The latest bulletin puts the number of dengue cases recorded in Bangladesh this year at 30,830. With three additional deaths reported over the past 24 hours, the cumulative death toll from the mosquito-borne disease has reached 88.
A total of 907 new patients were also reported in the latest 24-hour period. The figures underline the continuing transmission of dengue and the need for sustained efforts to reduce exposure to Aedes mosquitoes, which spread the disease.
Dengue commonly causes high fever, severe headache, body aches and weakness, while some patients can develop more serious complications. People experiencing persistent fever or worsening symptoms are generally advised to seek medical assessment rather than delay treatment.
The simultaneous rise in reported measles-related deaths and dengue cases places additional pressure on the country’s healthcare system. While vaccination remains a key measure in preventing measles, controlling mosquito breeding sites is central to reducing dengue transmission.
The latest figures therefore present two distinct but pressing health challenges: protecting children from serious measles-related illness and limiting the continuing spread of dengue. Continued surveillance, timely treatment and preventive measures remain crucial as health authorities monitor the situation.
