Prominent actress and director Meher Afroz Shaon has found herself at the centre of intense public backlash following a controversial social media post concerning the July mass uprising. Amidst growing public resentment, her personal Facebook account has abruptly disappeared from the platform. A close associate, author Tamanna Setu, claimed that the account was suspended by Facebook management following an overwhelming wave of user reports against her profile.
Tamanna Setu disclosed this development via a post on her own Facebook account on Sunday, 5 July. She stated that the sudden unavailability of Shaon’s profile was a direct consequence of mass reporting by disgruntled users. Crucially, Setu clarified that the specific post which triggered the widespread online controversy had not been deleted by Shaon herself, but rather vanished when the entire account was deactivated by the platform’s automated systems.
According to Setu, the actress personally reached out to share this information after realising her profile was no longer accessible. The sudden suspension appears to be an automated safety response by the platform to manage a massive influx of community standard violation reports filed by netizens within a short period.
This digital fallout follows a series of real-world legal challenges for the filmmaker. Recently, a formal written complaint was lodged at the Shahbagh Police Station in the capital against Shaon and five other individuals. The complaint, submitted by leaders of the Rashtra Sanglap Forum, accuses the group of making misleading and highly offensive remarks regarding the historic July mass uprising across various media outlets and social networks. The forum leaders alleged that these statements were deliberately designed to manipulate public perception and spread misinformation about the student-led popular movement.
Despite the escalating controversy, Shaon has yet to issue an official public statement addressing the police complaint or the suspension of her social media presence. Similarly, Facebook’s parent organisation, Meta, has maintained its standard privacy protocols and declined to comment on individual account suspensions. For the time being, the confirmation of the block relies solely on the accounts provided by her close associates, as formal verification from tech regulators remains unavailable.
