Mehidy Hasan Miraj, the prominent Bangladeshi all-rounder, has urged emerging cricketers to focus on building their own individual identities rather than attempting to emulate established legends like Shakib Al Hasan. Speaking at the inauguration of the Third Division Cricket Selection Tournament at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Miraj addressed questions from participating team captains and shared valuable insights into professional longevity, tactical discipline, and mental resilience.
When asked by Shawon, captain of the Junior Warriors Club, what it takes to emulate Miraj rather than striving to become the next Shakib Al Hasan, the national star emphasised self-belief and individuality. “Shakib brother is unique in his own right, and I am who I am,” Miraj stated. He explained that every athlete possesses distinct talents and should concentrate on maximizing their own potential. With dedicated hard work, the right mindset, and consistent performance, he added, young players could even surpass the benchmarks set by current international stars.
Reflecting on the inevitable slumps in a sportsman’s career, Miraj advised the youngsters to remain mentally steadfast during difficult periods. He noted that navigating rough patches requires unwavering belief in one’s capability alongside continuous physical and mental effort. According to Miraj, maintaining clarity of thought under pressure is what ultimately allows a cricketer to reach their long-term goals.
The off-spinning all-rounder also delved into technical aspects of the game, particularly bowling during restricted fielding phases. During powerplays, when batters inherently adopt an aggressive approach against sparse field placements, he cautioned against chasing wickets recklessly. “Focusing solely on taking wickets often leads to conceding unnecessary runs,” he noted. “Instead, concentrating on delivering dot balls exerts pressure and naturally creates wicket-taking opportunities.”
Similarly, for bowling in the death overs, Miraj highlighted the importance of absolute execution and tactical clarity. Hesitation in high-pressure scenarios, he explained, almost always compromises results. Addressing team crises, he urged young leaders to cultivate internal composure, project positive energy, and inspire confidence across the entire dressing room when matches hang in the balance.
