The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, triggered by U.S. and Israeli operations aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes, has now spread across fourteen countries, resulting in significant loss of life. Since 28 February, Tehran has responded with missile strikes targeting Israel and American interests, while also carrying out attacks in allied Arab states hosting U.S. or Israeli facilities.
According to Qatar-based Al Jazeera, a total of 2,287 fatalities have been reported across the region since the initial escalation. Iran, as the central theatre of the attacks, has borne the heaviest toll.
| Country | Fatalities | Commentary |
|---|---|---|
| Iran | 1,444 | Majority of deaths from U.S.–Israeli airstrikes; epicentre of conflict |
| Lebanon | 773 | Largely linked to Iranian proxy actions and clashes with Israeli forces |
| Iraq | 26 | Targeted strikes on U.S. bases and Iranian-aligned militias |
| Israel | 14 | Civilian and military casualties from Iranian missile attacks |
| United States | 11 | U.S. military personnel killed in operational theatres |
| United Arab Emirates | 6 | Collateral damage near U.S. facilities and strategic sites |
| Kuwait | 6 | Attacks on regional installations affecting coalition interests |
| Oman | 3 | Limited impact; primarily maritime and drone-related incidents |
| Bahrain | 2 | Minor casualties, mostly associated with base security incidents |
| Saudi Arabia | 2 | Regional spillover from missile or drone attacks |
The campaign began as a preventive strike strategy by the U.S. and Israel, intended to slow or neutralise Iran’s nuclear enrichment and missile development. Tehran’s counterstrikes have targeted Israeli cities, U.S. bases, and strategic installations in several Gulf states, demonstrating both regional reach and military coordination.
The escalation has caused widespread instability, with energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz disrupted and global oil markets under pressure. Regional actors, including Iranian proxies in Lebanon and Iraq, have actively engaged in cross-border operations, further widening the conflict.
Iran remains the epicentre, with both civilian and military casualties forming the bulk of the reported deaths.
Lebanon has seen significant fatalities due to proxy clashes, highlighting the transnational nature of the conflict.
Gulf states, while not direct participants, have experienced limited attacks due to hosting U.S. and Israeli military assets.
The conflict underscores the strategic vulnerability of U.S. and Israeli regional installations, as well as the broader challenge of containing Iranian influence across multiple fronts.
The cumulative toll of 2,287 deaths in fourteen countries highlights the intensity and geographic spread of the conflict. Analysts warn that, without a ceasefire or effective mediation, both military and civilian casualties are likely to rise. The widespread nature of the violence also raises concerns over regional energy security, international shipping, and global geopolitical stability.
