The United States military has launched fresh “defensive” strikes against targets inside Iran following the collapse of recent diplomatic talks aimed at securing a sustainable Middle East ceasefire. In addition to the strikes, American forces reported intercepting multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones deployed towards commercial shipping vessels and neighbouring Gulf nations.
According to United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the American operation targeted Qeshm Island—Iran’s largest island, located in the critical Strait of Hormuz. Washington stated the bombardment was executed to neutralise ongoing Iranian offensive operations across the wider region.
Concurrently, Tehran announced that it had conducted retaliatory operations, utilising missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to strike a US military base and an operational helicopter situated within an unnamed regional country.

This sharp increase in direct military conflict follows the failure of intensive weekend negotiations, which dissolved without progress after months of protracted regional warfare.
Providing further operational details, CENTCOM stated that the raid on Qeshm Island successfully targeted an Iranian military ground control centre. Furthermore, US forces intervened to shoot down three Iranian drones that Washington alleged were launched to endanger civilian mariners navigating international shipping lanes.
In response to the strikes, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a formal warning to Washington, declaring that aggressive American forces would pay a heavy price if they compromised the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
The exchange follows a pattern of hostilities in which Iran has repeatedly targeted infrastructure in Bahrain and Kuwait, both of which host critical US military installations. Prior to the latest aerial engagements, CENTCOM had confirmed disabling an empty, Iran-bound oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz as part of an active naval blockade enforced by Washington.
