A local leader of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) was subjected to a mob beating in Lakshmipur’s Raipur upazila following allegations that he had made provocative and offensive remarks, including alleged death threats directed at senior political figures. He was later handed over to the police by local residents.
According to police and local accounts, the incident occurred at around 8:00 pm on Saturday (30 May) at the Basabari Bazar area under Sonapur Union along the Raipur–Lakshmipur regional highway. The individual involved, Anwar Hossain (38), son of Mohammad Ali from Sonapur village, was reportedly detained by an agitated crowd and assaulted before law enforcement intervened.
Eyewitnesses stated that tensions escalated rapidly after allegations circulated that Anwar Hossain had repeatedly made controversial statements on social media targeting senior political leaders, including alleged derogatory and threatening comments. Some locals also claimed that he had previously been associated with political groups and later aligned himself with the NCP after the political changes of 5 August, though these claims remain unverified by authorities.
During the incident, the injured man was heard alleging that he had been attacked by individuals linked to a local political figure’s associates, calling for justice while being restrained. Police later arrived at the scene, brought the situation under control, and rescued him from the crowd before transferring him to Raipur Police Station, where he remains in custody.
On Sunday (31 May) at midday, a formal complaint was filed by Ruhul Amin (49), son of Shafik Ahmed from Char Baga village under Sonapur Union. The complaint named Anwar Hossain and three others as accused, alleging involvement in making offensive statements and related activities. The case was lodged under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
Police have confirmed that the complaint has been recorded and legal procedures are underway to produce the accused before the court.
A Raipur Police Station official, Officer-in-Charge Shahin Mia, stated that the individual identified himself as an NCP leader and was taken into custody after being rescued from public anger. He further noted that the investigation is ongoing and appropriate legal steps are being taken.
Local sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, described Anwar Hossain as a politically active figure who had previously been associated with a now-restricted political organisation before shifting allegiance in recent years. They further alleged that he had been involved in making contentious remarks about various political leaders at both national and district levels through online platforms.
Rescued from mob, taken into custody, legal proceedings initiated
Authorities have not yet confirmed the veracity of the allegations regarding the statements made by the accused, and he has not issued any public comment while in police custody. The investigation remains ongoing.
