Mobile Financial Agent Robbed of 550,000 Taka in Gaibandha Highway Heist

A mobile financial services agent was ambushed and robbed of 550,000 BDT at knifepoint along the Dhaka-Rangpur highway in Govindaganj upazila, Gaibandha. The incident occurred around midnight on Saturday near the JP Filling Station, where attackers also seized two mobile phones and the victim’s shop keys before fleeing.
Local residents intervened during the escape, managing to detain one of the suspects, identified as 30-year-old Shamim Sheikh. Sheikh, a resident of Rudranagar Gaochhapara village in Shivpur Union, was handed over to the responding police officers.
The victim, Ayyub Ali, operates a bKash dealership near the Dutch-Bangla Fast Track kiosk at the busy Govindaganj Charmatha intersection. According to local witnesses, Ali was walking home after closing his shop when a microbus intercepted him. Four assailants stepped out of the vehicle, physically assaulted Ali, and threatened him with sharp weapons before snatching his bag containing cash, a smartphone, a feature phone, and store keys.
Ali’s cries for help alerted workers at the nearby petrol station and passing pedestrians. Sensing the immediate risk of mob capture, the attackers rushed back to their microbus and sped off. Sheikh failed to board the getaway vehicle in time and was overpowered by bystanders.
On Sunday, 4 October, Ali lodged a formal complaint against four individuals at Govindaganj Police Station. Police recorded the case and formally arrested Sheikh before producing him in court later that evening, where the magistrate ordered his detention in prison. Investigating officers have requested a five-day remand to interrogate the suspect.
Officer-in-Charge of Govindaganj Police Station, Mahfuz Alam, confirmed that all four suspects reside within the upazila. Police investigations indicate that the gang had been conducting surveillance on Ali’s daily routine and movement patterns for some time prior to the strike. Law enforcement teams are carrying out drives across the district to arrest the three absconding accomplices and recover the stolen cash and electronics.
