Mohammad Abbas Dropped In Rare Selection Move By Pakistan

In a surprising selection decision that mirrors a four-decade-old precedent in Pakistani cricket, seam bowler Mohammad Abbas has been left out of the playing XI for the second Test against the West Indies despite claiming eight wickets in the series opener.

Statistical records reveal that this is the first instance in nearly 45 years where a Pakistani bowler has been dropped immediately after taking a five-wicket haul in the preceding Test match. The last occurrence dates back to the 1979–80 tour of India, when Ehteshamuddin was left out for the Chennai Test following a five-wicket performance in Kanpur, making way for Imran Khan.

Abbas delivered an exceptional individual performance during the first Test of the current series. In the West Indies’ second innings, his medium-fast bowling routed the hosts for 181 runs, with Abbas taking five wickets for just 22 runs. He had earlier taken three wickets for 63 runs in the first innings as the Caribbean side was bowled out for 311.
