Under the guidance of coach Sohel Islam, veteran Test batter Mominul Haque has undergone rigorous training to refine his left-arm orthodox spin ahead of the upcoming series against Pakistan. During the pre-series camp, Mominul was observed engaging in dedicated bowling sessions at the indoor facility nets, a strategic move initiated by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to bolster the team’s bowling variety.
The decision to prepare the 34-year-old as a viable bowling option stems from the captain’s desire to have a reliable fifth or sixth bowler. According to Sohel Islam, maintaining Mominul’s bowling rhythm is essential for match readiness. In Test cricket, an irregular bowler often struggles with line and length if called upon without adequate preparation, leading to expensive overs.
The coaching staff believes that if Bangladesh opts for a combination of three seamers and two specialist spinners, Mominul can provide crucial support to the primary spin trio of Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Nayeem Hasan.
While primarily known for his batting, Mominul has a proven track record of providing breakthroughs. He debuted his bowling in his inaugural Test match and has since delivered 162.1 overs across 51 innings in his 75-test career. Notably, his contributions were pivotal in historic victories against New Zealand:
Mount Maunganui (2022): Claimed two vital wickets in 4.1 overs.
Sylhet (2023): Secured three wickets in just 3.5 overs to facilitate a win.
Coach Sohel Islam noted that had Mominul bowled more consistently throughout his career, his wicket tally would likely exceed 50 or 60. Mominul, acknowledging this late career shift with a smile, expressed his commitment to the new responsibility, stating that regular bowling assists the captain in rotation and provides necessary respite to specialist spinners.
| Metric | Career Record |
| Test Matches Played | 75 |
| Innings Bowled | 51 |
| Total Overs Delivered | 162.1 |
| Total Wickets | 11 |
| Notable Performance (vs NZ, 2023) | 3 wickets for 4 runs (3.5 overs) |
| Notable Performance (vs NZ, 2022) | 2 wickets for 6 runs (4.1 overs) |
The initiative has also received positive feedback from spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed. The former Pakistani leg-spinner emphasized the importance of Mominul maintaining his bowling practice alongside his batting duties. Although Mominul admitted to not previously keeping track of his bowling statistics, he has pledged to focus on his contributions with the ball moving forward.
By integrating Mominul as a functional all-rounder, the Bangladesh team management aims to enhance their tactical flexibility, ensuring the squad is well-equipped to handle the rigours of a full Test series against Pakistan.
