Morning in Dhaka Through Pictures: Heightened Security and Political Parties’ Presence

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is scheduled to announce the verdict date today, Thursday, in a case concerning crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising. Among the accused are the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who has been listed as an approver (state witness) in the case. Meanwhile, the banned Awami League has called for an online “lockdown” program today, Thursday.

In connection with the Awami League’s announced “lockdown” program, at least 17 incidents of bus arson have occurred across the country over the past three days. Sixteen of those incidents took place in Dhaka and surrounding areas (Savar and Gazipur). One person was killed in Phulbaria of Mymensingh in a bus arson attack. Alongside these, multiple crude bomb (cocktail) explosions were reported, with at least 22 such incidents in different parts of Dhaka over the last three days.

Ahead of the verdict announcement and the Awami League’s “lockdown” program, security has been tightened in and around Dhaka’s entry points and key locations. Political parties including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are also active. Below are glimpses of morning scenes from Dhaka.
