Mother Hands Drug-Addicted Son to Police

In Sherpur, Bogura, a courageous mother has taken the extraordinary step of surrendering her drug-addicted son to the police, highlighting both the personal and social challenges posed by substance abuse. Following his arrest, a mobile court sentenced the young man to three months’ imprisonment without parole and imposed a fine of 50 taka. The session was presided over by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mahmudul Hasan on Tuesday morning.

The convicted individual, Sohel Rana (23), is the son of Josna Khatun, and the family resides in Gopalpur village within Khanpur Union, Sherpur Upazila. After the mobile court verdict, Sohel was handed over to the Bogura district jail by local police authorities.

Speaking to the press, Josna Khatun revealed that her son had been struggling with drug addiction for at least three years. “He would often physically assault us to obtain money for his habit,” she said. “If he did not get the money, he would damage household property. Surrendering him to the police was the only way to protect our family.”

Sherpur Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Bikash Chakraborty confirmed that Sohel was apprehended outside his home following a formal complaint by his mother. “Our officers observed the damage he had caused when denied funds for drugs,” he stated. “During interrogation, Sohel admitted to regular drug consumption. Subsequently, he was brought before the mobile court and, after sentencing, transferred to the Bogura district jail.”

The case has drawn attention from both local authorities and residents, serving as a sobering reminder of the impact of drug addiction on families and communities. Law enforcement officials emphasised that such interventions not only safeguard victims but also provide an opportunity for rehabilitation.

Residents of Gopalpur have expressed support for Josna Khatun’s actions, noting that family members often struggle to seek help when confronted with domestic challenges caused by addicted relatives. “It is a courageous act, and it sets an example for other families in similar situations,” said one local community leader. Authorities have indicated that they will monitor Sohel’s progress during incarceration and ensure that rehabilitation programmes are available to help him reintegrate into society.

This incident underlines the critical role of mobile courts and community policing in addressing minor but socially significant offences, particularly those linked to substance abuse. It also reflects a growing recognition in Bangladesh of the need to balance punitive measures with opportunities for recovery and reintegration.
