A violent confrontation in Keshabpur, Jessore, has led to the recovery of a stolen motorcycle, the arrest of one individual, and an ongoing police investigation into an attack on officers during an attempted handover of the vehicle outside legal procedures.
According to police and local sources, the incident began in the early hours of Friday when a motorcycle belonging to Ashrafuzzaman Rumi, a resident of Hasanpur village, was stolen from outside his home. Rumi is reported to be a member of the local student political wing.
Shortly after the theft was reported, police recovered the motorcycle from the residence of Abdul Rashid, 40, of Chingra village, during an operation led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Nazrul Islam of the Chingra Police Outpost. The suspect was detained in connection with the possession of the stolen vehicle.
However, tensions escalated later that morning when a group of approximately 40 to 50 individuals, including the motorcycle owner, arrived at the scene around 8:30 a.m. They demanded immediate release of the motorcycle without following due legal procedures.
Police officers at the scene informed the group that the vehicle could only be handed over through proper legal channels, in accordance with standard investigative and evidentiary protocols. The situation quickly deteriorated into a heated exchange.
During the confrontation, the group allegedly assaulted ASI Nazrul Islam and forcibly seized the motorcycle from police custody. The officer sustained minor injuries in the incident.
In response, the Officer-in-Charge of Keshabpur Police Station, Rokshana Khatun, led a rapid operation to regain control of the situation. Police subsequently recovered the motorcycle and restored order in the area. One individual, Abdul Rashid, was formally arrested in connection with the possession of the stolen vehicle.
Authorities have confirmed that the situation is now under control. Police are actively identifying those involved in the attack on law enforcement personnel, and operations are underway to apprehend additional suspects.
