In a dramatic turn during the Bangladesh Premier League auction, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad, who went unsold in the first round, found their teams in the second phase. Both had been listed under the coveted ‘B’ category, making them highly anticipated picks among the franchises.
Rangpur Riders snapped up Mahmudullah for a base price of 3.5 million BDT, while Mushfiqur joined Rajshahi Warriors. Normally, unsold players drop one category in the second draft, which would have placed them in the ‘C’ category. However, showing respect for their seniority and achievements, both franchises retained the players at the original ‘B’ category price.
Rangpur Riders’ owner, Ishtiaq Sadek, personally appealed to the BPL Governing Council to maintain the category, highlighting the importance of recognising seasoned talent. The council agreed, allowing both cricketers to retain their status.
Mahmudullah, who recently starred for Fortune Barishal in the championship-winning campaign, continues to shine in domestic cricket even after retiring from international duty. Mushfiqur, on the other hand, remains active in the national Test side and is enjoying impressive batting form.
The inclusion of these experienced campaigners strengthens the squads not only with skill but also leadership. Their presence provides guidance for younger players and adds depth to the batting line-up. The franchises’ decision reflects a deliberate strategy: valuing experience, rewarding consistent performance, and ensuring a competitive edge in the league.
With Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah now on board, Rajshahi and Rangpur have reinforced their squads with proven talent, setting the stage for an exciting and closely contested BPL season.
