Mushfiqur ODI Return Talk

Speculation has intensified in Bangladesh cricket circles over a possible One Day International return for veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim, reportedly encouraged by the national team’s ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz. However, head coach Phil Simmons has sought to temper expectations, emphasising that the experienced cricketer has already committed his immediate future to Test cricket.

Speaking on Wednesday, Simmons clarified that Mushfiqur has made a conscious decision to focus on the longest format of the game after reaching the significant milestone of 100 Test appearances. The coach described the achievement as a “remarkable landmark” in a distinguished career and suggested that any future involvement in ODIs would depend on circumstances rather than current planning.

“Right now, he has chosen to concentrate on Test cricket,” Simmons said, adding that the door is not formally closed but that the player’s current direction is clear. He acknowledged Mushfiqur’s value and experience, while underlining that team planning is focused on broader squad development.

The head coach also turned attention to Bangladesh’s overall batting structure, noting that there remains considerable room for improvement across the lineup. According to Simmons, progress is required from the top order through to the middle and lower-middle order, particularly in adapting more effectively to international demands. He highlighted that the side has shown some encouraging signs in the final overs of innings, including a strong finish against Pakistan where Bangladesh added around 80 runs in the last ten overs.

Simmons further addressed the situation of Soumya Sarkar, who was left out of the most recent series squad. He described Soumya as a talented cricketer with proven match-winning ability, referencing his strong performances against West Indies. However, he also pointed out that inconsistency and time away from regular competitive cricket have made it difficult for him to reclaim a place, especially as other players have performed well in his absence.

The coach stressed that adaptability remains a key requirement in international cricket. While many Bangladeshi batters are accustomed to top-order roles in domestic competitions, they are often required to adjust to different positions at the highest level. Performance in international cricket, he noted, depends more on handling conditions and roles than on domestic reputation.

Mushfiqur Rahim had earlier announced his retirement from ODI cricket following last year’s Champions Trophy, though he continues to feature in Tests and domestic competitions.
