A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Halmahera region in Indonesia’s northeastern North Maluku province. No reports of casualties or damage have been received so far. The information was reported by Khaleej Times on Sunday (23 November).
According to the report, Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes because it lies along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, where several tectonic plates meet. This results in frequent volcanic eruptions and seismic activities.
Meanwhile, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Myanmar. The tremor occurred at 10:39 am Bangladesh time.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the epicentre of the earthquake was located 267 kilometres west-southwest of Dawei city in Myanmar, in the Andaman Sea. The depth of the quake was 10 kilometres below the surface.
USGS further reported that the tremor was also felt in neighbouring Thailand. No immediate reports of damage were available.
Earlier, at 10:38 am on Friday, an earthquake was felt in the capital and various parts of the country. That quake originated in the Madhabdi area of Narsingdi and measured 5.5 on the Richter scale. Ten fatalities were reported, along with many injuries.
