Mymensingh Police Solve Beheading Mystery and Arrest Four Suspects

Police in Mymensingh have unravelled the mystery surrounding the gruesome murder of 25-year-old Sohel Sarkar, whose decapitated and partially decomposed body was discovered six days after he went missing. Investigators confirmed the arrest of four individuals, including the primary mastermind, following a series of coordinated raids across the district.

On Sunday afternoon, the suspects were presented before a local court, which ordered them to be remanded in custody.

Marital Jealousy Triggers Cold-Blooded Plot

The victim, Sohel Sarkar, vanished from his residence on the evening of 16th July. After futile attempts to locate him, his family filed a general diary with the Kotwali Model Police Station. The search ended tragically six days later, on 22nd July, when residents near the Ambikaganj College grounds spotted a severed, partially decomposed head in a nearby orchard and alerted the authorities.

Police subsequently exhumed a headless torso buried in the same vicinity. Sohel’s family members identified the remains using his discarded clothing.

Mohammad Shibirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, disclosed that the murder stemmed from an extra-marital dispute. The primary suspect, 30-year-old Selim Mia, suspected that Sohel was involved with his second wife. Selim—who is also the brother-in-law of Sohel’s sister—claimed during interrogation that Sohel had been living secretly in Dhaka with his second wife for three months. Driven by vengeance, Selim lured Sohel back from Dhaka, plotted his murder with accomplice friends, and led him away from his home before severing his head and burying the remains separately to conceal the crime.

Coordinated Raids Lead to Arrests and Recovery

Following a formal murder and evidence-tampering case lodged on Saturday by the victim’s father, Nurul Islam, law enforcement agencies deployed information technology and intelligence surveillance to track down those involved.

Specialist police units executed joint operations across Bhaluka, Mymensingh Sadar, and Mirkandapara, apprehending all four key suspects:

• Mo. Selim Mia (30): Primary suspect and alleged mastermind behind the plot.

• Abdul Quadir alias Al Amin (25): Direct participant in the execution and cover-up.

• Mo. Selim alias Napit Selim (32): Accomplice involved in luring and attacking the victim.

• Lal Chan alias Lalu (26): Co-conspirator assisting in evidence destruction and burial.

Based on confessions extracted during preliminary questioning, officers recovered critical physical evidence, including a sharp machete (da), a spade used for digging the shallow grave, bloodstained clothing, and sandals belonging to the victim. Police confirmed that all four detainees participated directly or indirectly in the murder, bringing swift closure to a case that had gripped the local community in horror.
