National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has warned that any attempt to rehabilitate the Awami League or its political allies will be met with strong resistance.
Speaking at an Iftar event held in memory of those martyred during the July revolution, Nahid said “Any plan to rehabilitate the Awami League will be dealt with an iron hand. Not just the Awami League, but all beneficiaries and collaborators of fascism must be brought to justice.”
Nahid said, “On August 3 at the Shaheed Minar, we made it clear: Awami League’s 15-year fascist journey began with the settlement of 1/11. That arrangement allowed Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League to come to power. We will not allow another 1/11 in Bangladesh.”
Referring to the mass protests last July, he added, “History has shown us that political vacuums in Bangladesh have repeatedly led to military interventions. But this time, the people are awake. The uprising has sparked a sense of ownership among the masses. That ownership must be restored to the people.”
Nahid also addressed circulating rumours about a behind-the-scenes effort to re-legitimize the Awami League. “We’re hearing whispers of a conspiracy to bring them back into the political mainstream. Any such move will be vehemently resisted,” he said.
