National Award-winning actor Shams Sumon has passed away.

Renowned actor Shams Sumon, recipient of the National Film Award, has passed away (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un). He died on Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm at a private hospital in Dhaka. He was 61 years old and leaves behind his wife, two sons, and a daughter.

The news of his death was confirmed to our representative by fellow actor Sujat Shimul. Speaking from the hospital, Sujat Shimul said that Sumon suddenly felt unwell around 5:00 pm. He informed another actor, Shahadat Hossain, who immediately took him to a private hospital in the Green Road area of Dhaka. Despite the medical team’s efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Sujat Shimul added, “After consulting with the doctors, we learned that the primary cause of Shams Sumon’s death was cardiac arrest.”

Shams Sumon was once a prominent figure in television dramas, admired for his versatility on stage, television, and cinema alike. Although he had been appearing less frequently in television productions in recent years, his performances continued to resonate with audiences.

Beyond acting, Shams Sumon held leadership roles in media. He served as the station head of Radio Bhumi and was the director of programming at Channel i, contributing significantly to Bangladesh’s broadcasting and entertainment sectors.

His funeral arrangements have been announced: the Janaza will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am at the Channel i premises in Dhaka, followed by interment at his family graveyard in Rajshahi in the evening.

Shams Sumon’s passing marks a profound loss for the Bangladeshi entertainment industry. His remarkable contributions to stage, screen, and television have left an indelible legacy, ensuring that his work will be remembered and celebrated by audiences for generations to come.
