The government has appointed administrators for six city corporations across Bangladesh, including Dhaka North and Dhaka South, as announced in a gazette notification published on Sunday, 22 February 2026.
According to the notification, Md. Abdus Salam has been appointed as the administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation, while Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan will oversee Dhaka North City Corporation.
Other key appointments include:
| City Corporation | Appointed Administrator |
|---|---|
| Khulna | Nazrul Islam Manju |
| Sylhet | Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury |
| Narayanganj | Md. Sakhawat Hossain Khan |
| Gazipur | Md. Shawkat Hossain Sarkar |
The notification cites Section 25K(1) of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, under which the administrators have been appointed as full-time officials of the respective city corporations until the formation of elected councils or until further orders are issued.
Appointed administrators are entrusted with exercising the powers and responsibilities of the city mayor. They will receive allowances in accordance with government regulations. The order emphasises that the appointments take immediate effect in the interest of public service.
This move is part of the government’s broader administrative measures to ensure uninterrupted governance in key urban centres until the next local elections. The selection of experienced civil servants and bureaucrats reflects an effort to maintain continuity and efficiency in civic administration, particularly in the nation’s capital and other major cities.
Officials noted that these appointments are expected to expedite ongoing civic projects, including urban development, infrastructure maintenance, and municipal services, ensuring that public welfare remains the priority during the interim period.
With these appointments, the government aims to strengthen the administrative framework of Bangladesh’s largest cities, ensuring accountability and professional oversight in municipal governance until elected representatives assume office.
