Neymar’s Controversial Red Card Overshadows Santos’ Late Equaliser

Neymar has sparked fresh controversy after being sent off during Santos’ 1-1 draw against Bahia in Brazil’s Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. The Brazilian forward received a straight red card following an exchange with Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor, during which Neymar covered his mouth with his hand while speaking to his opponent. The decision, made after a review by the video assistant referee (VAR), left the Santos star visibly angry.

The incident became the main talking point of a dramatic encounter at Vila Belmiro, Santos’ home ground, where the hosts salvaged a point with a last-gasp equaliser. Although the late goal prevented defeat, Neymar’s dismissal created fresh concerns for the club ahead of two important upcoming fixtures.

Bahia took the lead in the 39th minute through defender Luciano Juba. His goal put the visitors in a strong position, forcing Santos to search for an equaliser for much of the match. The hosts continued their efforts but could not find a breakthrough during normal time. In the dying moments of stoppage time, however, Luan Peres Petroni scored to secure a 1-1 draw.

The result offered Santos some relief, but the attention quickly shifted to Neymar’s dismissal. The incident occurred just before the start of the second half, when the forward approached Nestor for a conversation and covered his mouth with his hand.

Referee Sávio Pereira Sampaio was looking in another direction when the exchange took place. Following Nestor’s complaint, the incident was reviewed using VAR. After the review, the referee decided to show Neymar a straight red card.

The exact words exchanged between the two players were not established in the account of the incident. Neymar, however, strongly disputed the decision and accused Nestor of exaggerating what he described as a light-hearted exchange between the players.

Speaking as he left the pitch, Neymar said: “We were having fun on the pitch, laughing at each other. At that moment, I went over to speak to Nestor. I accidentally put my hand over my mouth, and I hadn’t even opened my mouth to say anything when he raised his hand and started making a scene.”

He then expressed his frustration in stronger terms, adding: “This is one of the dirtiest tricks in football! And I’ll deal with Nestor.”

Neymar’s dismissal came after an earlier disciplinary incident in the match. He had received a yellow card for throwing the ball at an opposing player’s chest. The subsequent red card brought his evening to an abrupt end and left Santos without one of their most recognisable attacking players.

The consequences could extend to the club’s next fixtures. According to the match report, Neymar will miss Wednesday’s meeting with Palmeiras because of the red card. He is also expected to be unavailable for the following Monday’s match against Red Bull Bragantino after collecting three yellow cards during the current campaign.

His potential absence from both matches represents a setback for Santos. Neymar’s technical ability, attacking creativity and experience make him an important figure in the side, particularly in games where the team needs an individual moment of quality to change the outcome. Losing him through suspension could complicate preparations for the upcoming fixtures.

The incident also highlights the continuing role of VAR in modern football. The technology allows officials to review incidents that might otherwise go unnoticed, but decisions involving exchanges between players can still generate disagreement, especially when the referee has not directly witnessed the original confrontation.

For Santos, the immediate task is to build on the late equaliser while preparing for matches without Neymar. The draw against Bahia prevented a home defeat, but the controversy surrounding the forward has overshadowed the result.

Neymar remains convinced that the decision was unfair, and his public comments have added another layer to the dispute. The dismissal, however, has already created a practical problem for Santos, who must now manage their upcoming fixtures without a key attacking option. Whether the controversy continues beyond the match, the club’s immediate priority will be maintaining its competitiveness while the Brazilian star serves his suspension.
