A 35-year-old non-governmental organisation (NGO) worker lost his life on Thursday afternoon, 6 August, following a head-on collision with a speeding lorry in the Pipulia area along the Harirampur-Balra road in Manikganj district.
The victim has been identified as Mizanur Rahman, son of Abdur Rahman, hailing from Tepra village under Shibalaya upazila. He was employed at Gankalyan Trust, a non-governmental development organisation active in regional community development.
According to local sources, Mizanur was returning home on his motorbike after completing official duties in the Dohar and Nababganj sub-districts of Dhaka district. As he navigated through Pipulia, a fast-moving, reckless lorry travelling in the opposite direction collided with his motorcycle, crushing the vehicle underneath its wheels.
The impact of the collision left the rider critically injured on the road. Nearby residents and passers-by rushed to the scene to render emergency assistance, but Mizanur succumbed to his severe injuries before medical help could be arranged.
Upon receiving information about the incident, a team from Harirampur Police Station arrived promptly at the site to secure the area, manage traffic flow, and recover the victim’s body. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mumin Khan confirmed the casualty, stating that police officers prepared the initial inquest report before transferring the remains for post-mortem examination.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the collision to trace the hit-and-run vehicle. Efforts are currently underway to identify the vehicle registration details and apprehend both the driver and helper who fled the scene immediately after the accident. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are being initiated in accordance with transport safety laws.
The tragic incident highlights the growing hazards posed by speeding heavy goods vehicles on narrow regional arteries across Manikganj district, where inadequate traffic enforcement frequently leads to fatal road accidents involving two-wheelers. News of Mizanur’s untimely death has cast a shadow of grief over his family and colleagues at Gankalyan Trust.
