Sangareddy: The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Authority (NHA), Dr Sunil Kumar Barnwal, has emphasised the transformative potential of the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) in simplifying and standardising health insurance claims across India. Speaking at the NHCX Innovation Meet held at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), Dr Barnwal noted that the complexity of health insurance claims remains one of the most persistent challenges in the nation’s healthcare ecosystem.
“The NHCX is not limited to hospitals and insurance companies alone; it is a platform designed to serve the entire healthcare ecosystem, including patients, providers, insurers, and technology innovators,” Dr Barnwal said. “Our long-term vision is akin to digital public infrastructure like UPI: users may not know the institution behind the system, but they trust the platform because it works seamlessly and reliably.”
The two-day event, held on 6–7 March, highlighted how digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and data-driven systems can strengthen claims processing while improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery at scale. The NHA brought together regulators, State governments, industry leaders, technology innovators, and academic institutions to foster the adoption of interoperable, standards-aligned claims solutions under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
The Innovation Meet also served as the grand finale for the NHCX Hackathon, conducted from 22–28 February, where winning teams presented their innovative solutions to a distinguished panel of judges. NHCX, one of three gateways under ABDM, is designed to streamline claims processes nationwide, enabling faster settlements and reducing administrative burdens for hospitals, insurers, and patients alike.
The hackathon and Innovation Meet were organised in collaboration with multiple key institutions, reflecting a broad ecosystem approach:

In addition, the NHA launched the NHCX Champions initiative, recognising organisations that have been instrumental in operationalising and scaling the platform across payers and providers. The event concluded with remarks from Kiran Gopal Vaska, Joint Secretary and Mission Director (ABDM), and Ajay Seth, Chairman of IRDAI.
Dr Barnwal expressed optimism that such ecosystem-driven innovation, coupled with policy dialogue and partner recognition, would accelerate the development of a digitally integrated, interoperable health claims ecosystem in India—ultimately making healthcare more efficient, transparent, and patient-friendly.
