The incident was reported by Al Jazeera on Monday, 2 November. All nine people aboard the aircraft died in the crash. However, no casualties were reported among people on the ground.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the incident in a statement posted on the social media platform X, describing it as a ‘horrific tragedy’. He said personnel from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had been dispatched to assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) with its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
The crash drew attention because of its proximity to Trump’s Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach. The aircraft came down in a populated area, raising concerns about the potential danger to nearby residents and properties.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis visited the scene and described the destruction as catastrophic. Speaking to journalists, he said the aircraft appeared to be falling from the sky like a missile before striking the ground. The impact reportedly left a large crater beside the road, while the explosion caused significant damage in the surrounding area.
Despite the scale of the destruction, DeSantis confirmed that no one on the ground had been injured or killed. This was a particularly fortunate outcome given that the aircraft crashed in a residential neighbourhood rather than an unoccupied area.
Air traffic control recordings have provided some insight into the moments leading up to the crash. According to recordings collected by aviation monitoring service LiveATC.net, the pilot initially reported an icing problem on the aircraft. The crew described the ice accumulation as manageable at first, but conditions appeared to deteriorate rapidly.
The cockpit recordings also captured the crew reporting turbulence and seeking a smoother flight path. Shortly afterwards, the aircraft began losing altitude at an alarming rate. In the final moments, the distressed crew could be heard warning that the aircraft was about to hit the ground. A distress call was also made as the situation became increasingly critical.
Videos circulating online showed the Learjet 60 descending steeply before slamming into the ground. The impact triggered a massive explosion, sending flames, smoke and debris across the surrounding area. Flight-tracking information also indicated an exceptionally rapid descent shortly before the aircraft disappeared from tracking systems.
The crash occurred in the Cresthaven area of Palm Beach County, near Lake Worth Beach. The location is less than 10 miles from Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s residence in Florida. The proximity of the accident to the high-profile property attracted additional attention, although there was no indication that the aircraft had been heading towards the residence. The jet was travelling on a planned route to the Bahamas.
The scale of the disaster also prompted an emergency response to protect people living nearby. Local authorities evacuated approximately 600 residents from a mobile home community close to the crash site. Emergency personnel worked to secure the area, while nearby roads were closed to allow rescue and investigative teams to operate safely. Temporary shelter arrangements were also made for those displaced by the incident.
Despite the extensive damage, officials confirmed that no one on the ground had been killed or injured. The identities of the nine victims had not been immediately released, and authorities had yet to provide detailed information about the passengers and crew.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with technical assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s maintenance history, flight data, cockpit voice recordings, weather conditions and possible mechanical problems.
Although the crew’s reports of ice accumulation and turbulence have drawn attention, officials have not established whether either factor contributed to the crash. The precise cause will depend on the findings of the formal investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks aircraft can face when operating in challenging weather conditions, particularly when icing and turbulence affect flight performance. Investigators will need to establish what happened during the final moments of the flight before determining why the aircraft plunged to the ground, killing everyone on board.
