One Dead as Mob Lynches Suspected Cattle Thief in Jhenaidah

An unidentified man was killed and another critically injured in a mob lynching incident over alleged cattle theft in Jhenaidah’s Kaliganj upazila. The incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday, 22 August, at approximately 3:00 AM in Badurgacha village.
According to local residents and police sources, a group of men entered the home of Nilufar Yasmin, a widowed resident of Badurgacha village, with the intent to steal cattle. Upon detecting the intruders, Nilufar Yasmin raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to converge on the property and give chase. Following a search of the surrounding area, villagers intercepted and detained two suspects.
An angry crowd gathered and subjected the suspects to a severe beating. One man died at the scene from his injuries, while the second suspect sustained life-threatening injuries before police intervention. The identities of both the deceased and the injured individual have yet to be established by the authorities.
Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station, Kabir Hossain, confirmed the incident, stating that police units arrived promptly to disperse the crowd and restore order. Officers recovered the body from the scene and sent it to the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. The surviving suspect was rescued and admitted to a local healthcare facility under police custody.
Addressing the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Kaliganj Circle, Mahfuz Hossain, emphasised that citizens must not take the law into their own hands under any circumstances. Police have launched a formal investigation to verify the sequence of events and identify those involved in the lynching. Efforts are also underway to establish the identities of the two suspects. Legal proceedings regarding the mob violence are currently being processed. National news outlets, including Khaborwala, reported on the incident and the ongoing police investigation.
