Tensions flared across several French cities following the national football team’s exit from the World Cup, after a 2-0 semi-final defeat against Spain. The disappointment on the pitch quickly translated into unrest on the streets of Paris and Lyon, where clashes erupted between pockets of supporters and riot police. In a swift bid to restore public order, law enforcement agencies launched coordinated operations, detaining more than 160 individuals across both metropolitan centres.

Prominent French news outlet reported that the capital city bore the brunt of the arrests, with Paris police detaining at least 141 people. According to the Paris Police Préfecture, the majority of these arrests were made after groups of hostile youths began targeting police officers and emergency service personnel. Protesters reportedly fired mortar-style fireworks and threw glass bottles at first responders who had been deployed to monitor the post-match gatherings.

Meanwhile, in Lyon, the trouble began at the Place Bellecour, where hundreds of fans had gathered to watch the crucial semi-final clash on a giant screen. While the atmosphere remained tense but peaceful during the match, the mood soured significantly after the final whistle. Small, organised groups of agitators refused to disperse, eventually confronting security forces. The situation escalated rapidly as individuals began hurling fireworks and other projectiles at the police lines.

To contain the escalating violence, local authorities deployed the CRS 83, a specialised tactical riot control unit. Joint forces managed to disperse the crowd and took approximately 20 individuals into custody in Lyon. Local administrative officials revealed that the vast majority of those detained in the city were teenagers and young adults, specifically born between the years 2002 and 2011.

Despite the widespread disturbances and the heavy deployment of tear gas and riot shields, authorities confirmed that there were no reports of serious injuries among either the public or the police force. Municipal authorities also noted that public infrastructure and private property escaped any significant damage, with recovery teams restoring normalcy to the affected areas by early morning.
