Pakistani Fighter Jet Crashes in Afghanistan, Pilot Captured

In a significant military incident on Saturday, 28 February, a Pakistani fighter jet crashed in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan. According to reports from the news agency AFP, the pilot of the aircraft was captured alive by Afghan security forces, including both the army and local police.

Eyewitnesses reported that the pilot had ejected from the aircraft using a parachute moments before the jet crashed. He was subsequently detained by Afghan personnel in the vicinity.

Police spokesperson Tayeb Hammad confirmed the operation, stating, “In the sixth district of Jalalabad, a Pakistani fighter jet was shot down and the pilot has been apprehended alive.”

Similarly, Wahidullah Mohammadi, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s Eastern Military Command, corroborated the incident, affirming that Afghan forces had successfully neutralised the aircraft and taken the pilot into custody.

Key Details of the Incident

Parameter Details
Location Jalalabad, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan
Date 28 February 2026
Aircraft Pakistani Fighter Jet
Pilot Status Alive, in Afghan custody
Casualties None reported among civilians or Afghan forces
Security Response Area cordoned off; security forces deployed for control

Sources on the ground described a scene of scattered wreckage and smoke in the crash area. Afghan authorities quickly secured the site to prevent any potential threats and initiated a detailed investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

Military analysts suggest multiple possibilities for the jet’s presence over Afghan airspace, including a navigation error, an emergency landing attempt, or involvement in a cross-border operation. Official statements from both Pakistani and Afghan governments regarding the purpose or origin of the flight have not yet been issued.

The capture of the Pakistani pilot is expected to have diplomatic and security implications, with Afghan authorities holding him in a secure location for interrogation. International observers are closely monitoring the situation amid rising regional tensions.

This event underscores the sensitive nature of cross-border military operations in the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier and highlights the potential for escalating conflict in the region if incidents like these are not addressed through diplomatic channels.

The situation remains fluid, and further updates are anticipated from Afghan defence and security officials as the investigation continues.
