A severe domestic conflict in Kishoreganj’s Pakundia upazila culminated in tragedy on Saturday night when a young man was fatally stabbed by his elder brother following a bitter dispute regarding the physical abuse of their mother.

around Saturday night in the Chardeokandi area of Mathkhola, situated within Pakundia upazila. The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Riyad Miah, son of the late Abul Kashem. Police have apprehended his elder brother, Hridoy Miah, in connection with the killing.

Local sources indicate that Riyad was heavily addicted to narcotics and routinely subjected his mother to physical violence when demanding money to fuel his substance abuse. The fatal altercation unfolded shortly after Hridoy returned home from Dhaka on Saturday evening. Upon learning that his mother had once again been assaulted by the younger sibling over drug money earlier in the day, Hridoy confronted Riyad.

The confrontation escalated rapidly into a heated argument. In the heat of the moment, Hridoy reportedly drew a knife and stabbed his younger brother directly in the chest. Neighbours rushed to the scene upon hearing the commotion and transported a critically wounded Riyad to the Pakundia Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians pronounced him dead on arrival.

Officers from the local law enforcement agency responded swiftly to the report of violence. Arifur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Pakundia Police Station, confirmed the detention of the primary suspect shortly after the incident. Police have taken Hridoy into custody, and formal legal proceedings, including the recovery of the weapon and preparation of the inquest report, are currently underway.

Drug-induced domestic violence remains a persistent social issue across rural regions, often leaving families with little institutional support until disputes turn deadly. The body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death as investigations continue.
